Emergency crews in Altona responded to a fire at a residence on Pioneer Drive in Altona Sunday night.

Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman says they were able to quickly extinguish the flames in a vehicle that caught fire.

"We got very lucky. The owner of the vehicle had just driven home, drove into his garage and was about to shut his car down when he noticed smoke. He immediately pulled it back out of the garage, which was a very smart thing to do."

The fire started in the engine compartment of the vehicle and burned a hole in the hood, according to Zimmerman.

"That made it relatively easy for us to get some water on it. There was no damage to the home."

Meanwhile, a 9-1-1 call came in Sunday morning from a resident who saw orange flashes and sparks in Altona's industrial park.

Zimmerman says that turned out to be some power lines that were arching due to the high winds.

It was a busy weekend for the fire department overall. Crews also responded to a barn fire early Saturday morning southwest of Altona.
