A young woman, originally from Southern Manitoba, and her family are getting ready to embark on an adventure that will take them from their current home in Shearwater, Nova Scotia to an island off the coast of Haiti.

April Tatton, formerly April Hildebrand, is from Altona and she and her husband, Jordan, along with their three kids are moving to La Gonave to work with West Indies Self Help or WISH. It is a fulltime, permanent mission.

WISH is a non-profit, inter-denominational organization whose mission is to translate the truth of Jesus Christ into deeds that alleviate the needs of the poor, giving them the opportunity to break their entrapping cycle of poverty. WISH began in the 1960s and serves with the goal of providing a hand up, not a hand out.

As April explains, her family has a unique connection to Haiti. Jordan is originally from the tiny island nation but was adopted by Canadian missionaries when he was two.

April added that the opportunity came about during a previous mission trip to Haiti with the current field directors of WISH, Rob and Beth Churchill, who also happen to be from the Tatton home church in Shearwater, Nova Scotia. At the time of that trip, Rob was working as an RCMP officer.

Jordan will conclude his career in the Royal Canadian Navy in Summer 2018, in order to accept the post of Assistant Director for WISH. April explained Jordan will use the skills he developed during his service with the RCN in this new job, which includes assessing machinery and equipment at the WISH compound in Haiti.

Jordan will also be working to mentor and equip the locals to be leaders within WISH.

As for April, she will take on an administrative role with the organization while also helping to host mission teams that arrive on the island.

The Tatton family will begin their transition to Haiti on November 5th when they leave for a vision trip to the country to get a better understanding of where they will be living, working and playing. It will also be an opportunity for April’s three kids to ask questions about what will soon be their new home.

The target date to officially move to Haiti is Summer 2018.

The family continues to build its team as it meets with various organizations and churches, with Global Partners already signing up.
