Derksen started with the Philadelphia Orchestra on October 28 as VP of Artistic Production.A former Winkler resident is taking up a prestigious new role with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Tanya Derksen explains her passion is, "to serve the community, bringing great music to the community whether it's in a concert hall playing Beethoven... or bringing musicians into a school or healthcare centre... just thinking outside the box to find new ways to bring this fabulous art form to as many people as possible."

Derksen attended Brandon University's School of Music before working eight years with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the past five as Executive Director of the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

She notes piano lessons was a passion as a child, and eventually started her career as a music teacher before falling in love with the orchestra world.

As VP of Artistic Production, Derksen will oversee numerous facets of the production and the orchestra's international tours.

Looking back at her upbringing in Southern Manitoba, Derksen says it created a strong desire to work in a great community, "and to create a great community as well."

"I will definitely take that sense of community and collaboration into working with the musicians and the Philadelphia community," she says.
