A new stop sign is in place after a train collided with a fuel truck in Winkler last year.

Earlier this fall, a northbound truck ran the stop sign at the rail crossing on Eastview Dr.

"He didn't cross the track fast enough and it could've been a disaster," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says. "The individual was very fortunate that nothing happened... but lesson learnt."

While the driver walked away from the accident, the seriousness of the incident has prompted the installation of a stop sign for southbound vehicles.

Previously the rail crossing only had a stop sign facing northbound traffic.

"You're in the habit of driving over it because there's virtually never a train coming," Harder says. "On one side there wasn't a stop sign, the other side there was... both sides have a stop sign now."
