Not even rain could dampen the spirits of Winkler/Morden Habitat For Humanity members as they unveiled their residential lot in Winkler; the first time in nearly 30 years that a home will be built under the Habitat For Humanity banner.

It was important to have locations in both Morden and Winkler Chair Duane Falk says, as it shows the importance of the support which both communities have shown for the chapter.

"That's what we wanted to do right off the bat. We hummed and hawed whether we would focus on one and then the other trying to get someone in the house right away. We felt if we can get established in both areas and to really and get both communities backing us at once, that might just get rid of any animosity that might be there."

The lot located at 134 Main St. will be the perfect location for a Habitat home says Falk. It's close to the library, schools and within walking distance of grocery stores.

Morden/Winkler MLA Cameron Friesen was in attendance to celebrate the announcement.

"This is a very exciting venture for not just to see Habitat for Humanity back on our scene locally after so many years, really a resurgence, not a new idea, but also to see the speed at which this idea is taking form and going forward."

Mayor Martin Harder says the fabric of the community is coming together and has no doubt people will get behind the project and have the homes built in no time.

Last week the lot for Morden's Habitat home was unveiled and plans are in place to raise funds needed to begin construction on the homes in both Morden and Winkler tentatively for next spring.

A lunch is being held May 23 at the Days Inn Conference Centre to interest businesses in the area to get on board and aid in giving a hand up to families that need a home.
