The Gallery in the Park hosted a private opening Thursday night to introduce its spring session.

Among the permanent gallery, which includes art by Gail Sawatzky, Jayne Nixon and Sharon Cory, Winnipeg artist Jordan Miller has set up her newest display called, "Relationships."

Miller is originally from Carman, and attended the gallery's grand opening nine years ago, a reason why she applied to be featured.

"I saw this gallery and thought, 'one day I want to show into this gallery,' but at the time I didn't feel that I was at the right point," she said.

Miller's exhibition includes over 70 pieces of original artwork and marks the 15th year of her participation in gallery spaces.

The artist said much of her inspiration was drawn from her relationship with her mentor, who passed away shortly before Miller was accepted into the gallery.

"I felt like I needed to do a painting with [my mentor] in mind, so I started that painting and then was going to build on my show as relationships that I've experienced in my life," said Miller.

However, creating the exhibition was not easy work. In the early stages of painting, Miller injured her right arm. As a person who is right-handed, she had to rely on her left hand to finish the artwork.

Miller persevered through the injury and said she is proud of how far she has come.

The evening was also an opportunity to welcome new artwork to the gallery including a new sculpture by Alexander Caldwell called, "Big Orange," now sits in the Sculpture Garden.

Next year another sculpture will be introduced, this one created by Steven Penner, as part of the gallery's ten-year anniversary.
