Garbage cans and containers will no longer be accepted at the curb in Winkler.

The change takes place January 1 and is expected to speed up pick-up for the city's waste contractor and save taxpayer money.

The issue was brought up due to the increase in compost curbside collection from 8 months to 12 months a year. Instead of a price increase, the city made a compromise with contracted waste disposal service Penner Waste.

"They're suggesting we restrict our garbage pick-up to bags because it makes it much faster... that way they would have the time to pick-up all the compost," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder explains.

Harder says while bags are requested for holding garbage, and containers for compost, containers or bags are still accepted for recycling at the curb.
