Gateway Resources is expanding, adding a new Social Enterprise Opportunity for adults living with an intellectual disability with the purchase of Clay Owl Studio and Boutique in Winkler.

Gateway CEO Kim Nelson explains the business will provide another place for participants to work and gain further job skills. Currently, Gateway Resources participants work in a number of businesses throughout the community, gaining on-the-job training and decreasing barriers for people who live with disabilities.

"And they would like more opportunities to work... so this is an opportunity where we can have a staff coach work right alongside them and continue and enrich their job skills," Nelson says.

"We love what Clay Owl has done for the community of Winkler and the solid foundation they've built," she adds, noting proceeds from the business will help pay the participants and enhance the business.

Nelson says customers should expect a smooth transition and no changes to hours or atmosphere. "We're just hoping to carry on as usual."

Corrie Kehler from Clay Owl explains she started the business over six years ago, "and I don't regret it for a second," but says they felt it was time to move on.

"It was a tough decision because it was a piece of us... so I'm super excited someone is taking it on and we'll still be able to come and paint."

Clay Owl offers a variety of clay items for customers to paint at the Mountain Avenue studio. Projects are ready for pickup a week later after being fired.

The sale will be official on April 1.
