George H. Klassen has been announced as the 2017 Citizen of the Year by the Winkler Community Foundation. The award is significant to the community, because it "shines the light on people who make a difference".

Klassen, former General Manager of Winkler Co-op, said he was surprised to find out he had been nominated. "Why me?" he said, "Your memory goes back to all these other people who are so deserving".

The Foundation stated Klassen was chosen for his strong community commitment, and efforts toward revitalizing downtown Winkler. He was able to foster a sense of community despite Winkler's rapid growth.

"Together we can do way more than people can separately," he said.

The vision of downtown was important to Klassen.

"Co-op was committed to downtown, and to make that a vibrant place was going to be a challenge, and of course, I've never backed away from a challenge."

He is also proud of his involvement in the Winkler & District Chamber of Commerce, of which he was President for the years 1998 to 2000. He recalls being short on money for the Harvest Festival one year, and therefore sold farmer sausages to make up the difference.

"I remember standing in the middle of the street saying 'I'll never do this again', I'm going to find a way to fund this festival properly", he said.  "We shouldn't change it for the sake of change, but, if we can improve something... then go for it," he explained.

Klassen was also proud to be part of a movement that relieved the Chamber of its former fundraising duties.

"Now the Chamber staff has time to deal with Chamber items instead of fundraising," he said. "That's always top of mind, how do we improve things, how do we change things."

Klassen challenges people to contribute to their community and help others.

"Life is just so much better when you're actually helping somebody out there, that should be the goal," he said.

As Citizen of the Year, Klassen is able to give $1,000 to a charitable organization of his choice, known as the Citizen of the Year Choice Grant.

Klassen will be honoured at the 2017 Citizen of the Year Banquet in September. Tickets are available through the Winkler Community Foundation office.

Klassen says helping others and his community gives him a sense of accomplishment
