We're just over three weeks into Gun Amnesty Month.

Local police services are accepting weapons and ammunition, no questions asked, unless they were used for criminal activities.

Anyone interested is encouraged to contact their local police service and arrange a time for their equipment to be picked up. It is discouraged that anyone bring their equipment to the police station themselves.

"There are people who are a little bit concerned, 'is this really hassle-free?'; absolutely, it is an amnesty, it is hassle-free," said Altona police Chief Perry Bachelor. "It's a great opportunity to maybe get rid of some of those unwanted firearms."

The Altona Police Service has received a few guns and many inquiries, he said.

The purpose of the program is to provide an effective and safe way for people to dispose of their weapons, whether it's because they no longer want them or because they are not legally entitled to own them, according to the RCMP website.

The program will end at the end of June.
