The harness racing circuit in Manitoba is coming down the home stretch for the 2017 racing season.

The third and final racing stop in Killarney took place on Sunday with a good crowd on hand to enjoy an afternoon of horses and racing.

“This was the third and final weekend of racing here in Killarney and yes it has been successful with good crowds and the parimutuel handle has been good and everybody has had a lot of fun” said Darryl Mason President of the Great Western Harness Racing Circuit.

This year four Manitoba communities are hosting the 10 racing weekend dates. “The only racing left now is in Miami and we are there September 3rd and 10th.”

This year's races have drawn horses and races from a variety of communities. They come from as far east as St. Malo and as far west as racers coming from Saskatchewan. Mason points out more of the competitors are from Southern Manitoba.

For Mason he says the racing is a real family affair. “My daughter is here today and her boyfriend are helping out. My other daughter does charting in the grand stands for the judges, my mother works at the stands and my dad is running the water truck.”

Mason says wagering is up about 110% over last year and attendance has virtually doubled.

Communities hosting races this year are Killarney, Morris, Miami and Holland.
