Above seasonal temperatures are expected to hit the Pembina Valley this weekend as a hot and humid air mass moves into the province.

While Environment Canada says temperatures and humidex values are expected to remain below heat warning criteria for southern Manitoba, they recommend taking precaution as extreme heat affects everyone.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Pets are also susceptible to heat, and should never be left alone in a vehicle in warm weather.

If you see an animal left in a vehicle on a warm day, Manitoba's Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer recommends you contact the Animal Care Line at 204-945-8000 or 1-888-945-8001 (toll-free) or a local police detachment.

With the 50th Canada Summer Games set to kick off this weekend, it is important to remember to drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in the shade or a cool place when able to do so.

In addition to the heat and humidity, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop Saturday afternoon across much of southern Manitoba. Current indications are that some of these thunderstorms may become severe over the course of the day.

These thunderstorms will taper off Saturday evening, but the potential for more active weather will continue across the region on both Sunday and Monday.
