A recent announcement made by the Canadian Radio-Television and Communications Commission declaring high-speed internet a basic service leaves the Reeve for the RM of Piney feeling hopeful.

The ambitious goal set out by the CRTC will allow rural and remote residents to access the high-speed internet services on fixed and mobile devices over the next five years, which also requires providers to offer an unlimited data plan.

Wayne Anderson says providing high-speed internet in rural areas like the RM of Piney might be what keeps more young people in the area. “We're hoping with modern times and businesses on the internet, people might set up home-based businesses.”

Right now Anderson says there are a few towers going up and will be online shortly, allowing residents to sign up and access the service in spring.

He says young people are very knowledgeable and could possibly benefit from having high-speed internet, which would allow for the option of starting a home based business. He says there aren't many employment opportunities in the Rm of Piney and home-based businesses would be great for the area.

Anderson says many young people are traveling to larger cities to find employment or are moving away to find work. With high-speed internet, he hopes to keep more young people in the community and perhaps encourage an entrepreneurial spirit.
