The Jaws of Life helped extricate an accident victim on Sunday.

Winkler Fire Department members were on scene at an accident on Pineview Dr. just before 1:00 p.m. Firefighters used Jaws of Life to free a passenger.

"We had to get them out, it was a significant enough of a crash that in order to remove one occupant the door needed to be taken off," Winkler Fire Chief Richard Paetzold says.

Winkler Police report the collision occurred at the intersection of Pembina Ave and Pineview Dr. Further investigation revealed that a southbound car had proceeded through the intersection and was hit by an eastbound truck. The passenger in the car was transported by ambulance to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the car was issued a ticket for proceeding before it was safe to do so.

Paetzold explains Winkler firefighters train regularly with the Jaws of Life, noting they may go months between calls where the hydraulic equipment is needed to pry apart wreckage.
