Altona Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman has some tips on how to prevent seasonal decorations from becoming fire hazards.

Many people have already put up their Christmas tree, and Zimmerman said keeping your pine tree watered is a good idea.

"If you're using a real tree, the objective would be to keep it well watered and try and keep it green. A dried out real tree becomes an extreme fire hazard," he said.

He also has some advice when it comes to lighting up the tree.

"If you're using an artificial tree, then you just have to watch the lighting that you put on it. As long as you're using the LED lights you shouldn't have a problem. If you're using an older style light, they usually generate a fair amount of heat, so you just sort of have to keep an eye on what you put next to the lights."

Many holiday decorations require electricity, and Zimmerman wants to remind residents about extension cord safety.

"Watch your extension cords, make sure that you have the properly sized extension cord," he said. "Extension cords are really only for temporary use."

Fireplaces will also be put to use this time of year.

"If you do have a fireplace, an open fireplace, make sure you have a screen in front. Sometimes the wood does pop off little sparks or embers," Zimmerman said.

Candles also become more popular around this time, and Zimmerman recommends keeping an eye on those as well.

"If you're using candles, it's recommended that candles be... in a jar, so if they're tipped over they're not a problem. If you don't have candles like that then make sure that they're mounted on a very secure base, and keep your eye on burning candles."
