The weather might not have been favourable on Saturday, but the streets were bustling as excited families spent the day in La Riviere for the annual Turkey Fest and Duck Race.

From a bubble station and Belgian bowling to crowd favourites, such as the duck race, activities were plentiful and kept crowds busy well in to the evening as 10 years of the festival were celebrated.

Having been Chair of the La Riviere Recreation Department for 4 years, Evelyn Janzen explains how Turkey Fest has evolved since it's inception.

"Well when I sat on as a board member [10 years ago] I suggested we do a duck race. On of the board members laughed at me and said, "You can sell a duck?" and I said, "I can sell a duck," and here we are 10 years later and we're sold out for our 4th year in a row."

A total of 700 ducks raced to the finish line

With 700 ducks bringing in $3500 this year, Janzen says that half of the money goes in to prizes while the rest stays with the Recreation Association to help maintain the building and put on special projects throughout the year such as public skating.

To continuously put on this event every year, Janzen notes they have 35 volunteers working to help keep Turkey Fest running and says she wouldn't be able to do it without them.

"We're very blessed."

Kathy Gibbs who has lived in the area for 11 years and volunteered since Turkey Fest started, says her favourite part of the festival is meeting new people and explains why she calls La Riviere "a little piece of Heaven."

"Well look at where we're situated; we're a close knit community. When an idea comes up to do something, everybody jumps in and pitches in. I mean that [was] apparent from [Saturday]. Everybody just jumps in and away you go."

Gibbs adds she's looking forward to improving Turkey Fest in the years to come by adding and changing activities and is excited to volunteer at many more events to promote the community of La Riviere and show people a great time.
