The numbers are in and officials with the Legends Car Club say a record amount of money was raised at the group's 2019 Cancer Run held in May. The event generated $25,170, smashing the previous benchmark by about $3,000.

Spokesperson, Russ Toews, says this year's event was dedicated to the memory of two Legends members who passed away from cancer in the past year, Bernie Klassen and Murray Wieler, and feels that may have contributed to the success. In fact, Wieler was one of the founding members of the Cancer Run.

"I think everybody put in a little bit of extra effort on account of them and things turned out great," said Toews.

For nearly two decades funds raised from the Cancer Run have benefited cancer research and supports. Initially, the money was sent to CancerCare Manitoba but was later diverted to the local organization, South Central Cancer Resource.

"I don't think there is anybody around that hasn't been touched by this disease...and we feel (SCCR) is a very worthwhile cause," added Toews.

The club presented a cheque to SCCR at its annual Manitoba Sunflower Festival car show last weekend in Altona.
