For the third time since 2014, a Morden yard has been selected as the winner of the Manitoba Good Roads 2016 Best Home Grounds Competition, this year's winners were Ron and Lynne Braun.

"We are quite surprised to hear it but are pretty honoured. It's good for the City of Morden as it promotes the town," said Braun.

It all started when Hank Hildebrand had asked Ron and Lynne if they'd allow their yard to be a part of the competition and after some thought, the Brauns agreed. According to Braun the judges then provided a time frame as to when they were coming and inspected the yard.

"Last year we were fairly fortunate with timely rains," said Ron.

Lynne noted the judges came to see their yard in the fall and were happy with what they saw.

"I think that we've used a lot of natural stone from the area and have tried to get it to blend into its surroundings instead of trying to do it to formal,'' said Lynne when asked about what she thought the judges liked about their yard. "A lot of the plants that we chose were ones that would grow in shady areas. We also added walkways and included a fire pit area. It's still a bit of a work in progress. Our main concern when planning the yard was to make it easy to access the back yard. So, we did sloped walkways rather than just stairs. We terraced both sides of the yard with natural stone. We used the terrain to do the waterfall and the pond. We tried to use what was here, so it didn't look unnatural."
