Ed Rogalsky dreams of a world where people can heat their homes while healing the planet.

In fact, as the owner of Bio-Heat Resources, he's made it his mission to provide a variety of green, renewable options that save people money in the long run.

Whether it's using the Earth itself through geothermal heat pumps, fireplaces and wood stoves, or the sun through solar panels, Rogalsky says there are many ways to heat your homes and businesses that help preserve the planet.

"We're living in Manitoba, right? There's a lot of heating during our nine months of winter and lots of people have heating systems that are cheap to install but very expensive to operate," he explains.

Bio-Heat Resources Owner Ed Rogalsky dreams of more people burning wood, not money.

Instead, options like geothermal can save people 66 percent of their heating costs if they switch from electricity. And the technology only keeps getting better, he says.

"Looking forward to the new geothermal systems, they're becoming more and more efficient, so the saving is higher for homeowners," Rogalsky says. "That's exciting because every time they come up with a new compressor or something it brings up the efficiency a few percentages."

He notes geothermal was 300 percent more efficient than electricity when he started in the industry two decades ago. Today, geothermal sits at 450 percent efficiency.

"So it's increasing efficiency and lowering operating costs."

And while more expensive to install, he notes there are many financial incentives from the government that can offset that burden. He adds there are some exciting new grants coming in 2021 to watch out for.

Wood stoves are also becoming a popular option, he says, adding when the wood is burned properly it's actually one of the most efficient and environmentally-sound ways to generate heat because it uses a renewable, abundant energy resource with zero net carbon contribution.
