In an act to be more inclusive, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has changed the title of National Aboriginal Day to National Indigenous Peoples Day, which takes place on June 21 every year.

Roseau River Chief Craig Alexander said this modification will act as a stepping stone toward enhancing the relationship between Canada and Indigenous peoples.

"It's a name change that will show respect between Canada and our First Nations people, and that's what we need to build nation to nation relationships going forward into the future," said Alexander.

The name change will now extend over to Metis and Inuit, rather than only Aboriginal.

National Indigenous Peoples Day was first established in 1996 as a day to reflect on the culture and contributions of First Nations people as the original inhabitants of the land.
