The dry conditions this summer haven't had much of an impact on the Gardenland Growing Project near Winkler. Project spokesman George Klassen says they planted five different crops this year, and have had some great results.

"We had a quarter section of canola which did over 50 bushels per acres, our oats did quite well at about 140 and the barley did about 100 bushels an acre."

Harvest participation has been excellent so far, according to Klassen. He pointed out that it's such a busy time of year for farmers as they try to take care of their own crops in addition to the Grow projects.

"We had one field where the farmer could not harvest it, so three local implement dealers came out to do the combining for us. It was just awesome."

The Gardenland project still has some soybeans to harvest which will only add to their overall contribution to the Foodgrains Bank this year.

"The cash value of the crops for this year is going to be, for sure, about a quarter million dollars, and the federal government will also kick in some extra money, so it's been a very good year."
