Joanne Bergen will stay on as receptionist of the Winkler Heritage Museum. The position was originally made possible last year through an Employment Manitoba program called Manitoba Works.
Museum Curator Dora Hildebrand says the funding was only for one year. "There was no other program going with the government, and there seemed to be no way we could get the money to pay the salary. So we decided to hire her (Bergen) for twenty hours a week and we'd raise money with fundraisers. We've started on that and so far it's working," said Hildebrand.
Hildebrand says having Bergen stay on is vital to the museum. She says without the position they would only be open six to ten hours a week. "To pay the rent for six hours a week just didn't make sense."
Hildebrand says having Bergen stay on will allow them to have the museum open twenty hours a week.
At this point Bergen has a six month contract with the museum, which runs until December 1st.
