Despite significant snowfall earlier this month, the threat of widespread, major spring flooding in Manitoba remains low to moderate in most areas.

Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said this second and final spring outlook issued by the province does include the snow that is expected to come this weekend. However, he added there is a moderate risk of overland flooding of low-lying areas along the Red River and Assiniboine River.

Schuler did note that ice thickness remains above normal on many rivers and said related flooding could be an issue. He pointed out that ice jam mitigation on the north Red River has been completed with 28 KMs of ice cleared away. Crews are now being sent to other rivers in Manitoba and to the Portage Diversion.

Schuler added the use of flood management infrastructure will be limited this spring.

Highway 75 is expected to remain open with the use of the Red River Flood Way.

The Portage Diversion will be used for ice control and to limit downstream flows along the lower Assiniboine River.

The Shellmouth Dam will continue operations to reach summer levels after the spring run off.
