EpiPen producer Pfizer Canada has put out a recall for two types of Junior Epi-Pens in several countries, including Canada.

The recall was voluntarily made by Pfizer after consultation with Health Canada. In Canada, the recall will impact one lot (5GU763) of the 0.3 mg strength of EpiPen Auto-Injector and one lot (5GU763) of the 0.15 mg strength of EpiPen Jar Auto-Injector.

"Through the media we are really hoping to get the message out, parents should be looking specifically at their child's EpiPen to see if that lot is part of the recall." said Dr. Denis Fortier, Southern Health-Santé Sud Vice-President of Medical Services. There is a potential manufacturer's defect in the auto injector, so it's either not injecting or is difficult to inject, leaving people unsure of whether they received the dose needed or not, " said Fortier.

The defect could have serious consequences. Failure to receive the right amount of drug could result in an anaphylactic allergy, according to Fortier.

"So, you don't want to be seconding guessing."

Though the defect causing the problem is considered extremely rare, the devices are being recalled out of caution. Pfizer Canada says they will replace recalled devices for free. Patients, healthcare professionals, wholesalers, as well as pharmacists are being notified about the recall.
