A Canadian manufacturing company has released a few more details about its plans to set up in the city of Morden.

Drive Products announced earlier this month it will locate its manufacturing division - Voth West - in Morden's industrial park.

Tyler Moss, vice president of sales and marketing for Drive Products says the building they're constructing will be about 60,000 square feet in size and will be used to produce a mix of truck bodies and truck-mounted equipment.

The plant was originally going to be built in Regina, Saskatchewan, but Moss says that plan changed to Morden for one main reason.

"It was really driven by the central geography of Manitoba. We like the location because it gives us access to the midwest United States market."

Moss expects Drive Products will turn the sod on the construction site in a few weeks. He expects the plant will likely employ about 20 workers in year one, rising to about 50 workers in year two and close to 75 employees by year three.

Jason Dyck, Morden's economic development officer, says it an exciting development for the community and a nice addition to their industrial park.

"We estimate they'll have about 68,000 square feet of shop space with some office space and production area over a couple of different buildings. That's a significant contribution to our productive capacity here in Morden as well as tax revenue for the city."

Dyck says one of the things that officials with Drive Products valued about Morden was its ability to access labour from outside the region through its very successful immigration program.

"Our immigration program has never been busier and in fact, we're working with a number of employers right now to see how many folks we can bring into the community. Our program has been doing its best to find the best skill levels from abroad and bring them into the city so that when they arrive ... they're coming with the experience and education required to get the job done on the shop floor."

Dyck adds the Drive Products team has been very good to work with and they're interested in coming to Morden and investing in it.
