The mayor of Altona is optimistic the former Domo Gas Bar building won't sit empty for too long.

The business, located at the corner of Centre Avenue and 6th Street Northeast, closed its doors last week.

The former McDonalds restaurant building also sits empty on that busy juncture.

Al Friesen admits that seeing a 'For Sale' sign at one corner and a gas mart closed at the other corner, at one of the main entrances into the community is unfortunate, but realistically the town has a limited role to play in the future of those properties.

"We don't like it, but it's not as if town council is going to establish a business at either location. Our role is, when things happen and there's some interest, we would welcome discussions and use the approach that the town is open for business."

The closure of Domo leaves just one filling station remaining in the community, but Friesen maintains a positive outlook and suggests that situation could change at anytime.

"I do know that there are still two other businesses operating on the Domo lot and they are doing well, and that the owner of the building is also an aggressive business operator who no doubt will be working to fill that space with whatever makes sense. I'm confident in that."
