If there’s anything that sets this year's graduating class at Mennonite Collegiate Institute (MCI) in Gretna it is distinguishable character of generosity, says interim principal Cheryl Braun.

Braun recalls the challenge of choosing a recipient for the Spirit of Generosity award presented on behalf of Abundance Canada earlier this school year.

“We had a really hard time narrowing it down to just one person this year, because there were just so many kids who have got this generous spirit – where they give their time, their energy, their passions,” said Braun.

This is one of the many characteristics, she said, that makes this graduating class of 35 students unique.

Though diverse in their interests and abilities, Braun said one of the leading highlights from this past year is when almost every Grade 12 student collectively participated in the annual musical, bringing them altogether for the same reason. Whether their role was production, hair and makeup, or acting, they all worked hard to put together a successful show.

According to Braun, valedictorian Griffin Kehler is a student who reflects all of these qualities.

“Griffin is a young man with endless energy and endless enthusiasm for every good idea that’s out there,” said Braun, adding Kehler is also creative and easily connects with any group of students. “He’s incredibly engaging, outgoing and charming in all good ways.”

Alongside the arts, Braun said these students are high achievers in academia. Most of them are enrolled in post-secondary education for the fall, or are set to embark on mission work and discipleship training. Others plan to work before pursuing additional schooling.

After graduation, Braun said she is excited to see how this class will change the world in 20 years.
