A Miami man recently ran 100 miles in 27 hours. Chad Koscielny completed the 100 Mile Run in Wisconsin earlier this month.

Starting with a love of 5K runs in 2013, he worked his way up to 50k.

"It's been a long time in the making, it was 2013 when I read about people that actually ran these distances, I had no idea this was even possible," he says. "It was a slow build from there."

An official marathon has a distance of 42.195 kilometres or approximately 26 miles. His lastest ultramarathon was approximately 160 kilometres or 100 miles.

"I remember my first 50 miles, that was a really tough race," he says. "Learned a lot and went from there."

Koscielny eventually signed up for his first 24-hour race "to see what it felt like to stay up all night."

The 100 Mile Run in Wisconsin on August 3 took 27 hours and 15 minutes.

While seemingly a gruelling physical punishment, he says the big draw is simply "to see if I could do it," he says.

One of the many challenges during the ultramarathon from Illinois to Wisconsin was eating on your feet. "It's almost as much as an eating challenge as a running challenge because you gotta keep food going in ... or else it's not possible to make it that far."

The key, however, is focus. "It's one foot in front of the other ... at the beginning, it's counting miles, at the end, it's counting steps."

After finishing the race, Koscielny says he crawled under a tree and slept for two hours.

Still recovering from the stiff and sore muscles, as well as a sprained foot, he hopes to be running again in September.
