The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba walked away with the most votes for funding after the Morden Area Foundation's second annual Power of the Purse fundraiser Mar. 4.

Of the total $10,000 available, the ASM was given $4,108.46 to start a Minds in Motion program in the area.

"I was really impressed with each of the presentations and the diversity of the need that was represented by each one of them," said Kathy Ritchie, former board member with Morden Area Foundation.

The three organizations requesting funds were the Pembina Valley Childcare Centre, Agassiz Medical Clinic Community Board, and the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.

PVCC received $2,683.27 for baby room equipment in its upcoming centre, set to open in fall. The Medical Clinic Board received $3,208.27 to help start a clinic for local teens.

Power of the purse formed around six years ago when some local women started the Women's Giving Circle, raising money for the needs of women in the community, which may be lacking.

"They would be able to support with their donation dollars organizations and opportunities that would enhance the life of families, women, and children in our area," said Ritchie.

"Each woman has an opportunity, at this event, to decide for herself [what] she would like her money to support," said Ritchie.

Only 90 women out of the intended 100 attended the Power of the Purse on Mar. 4, but the remaining funds were supplied through the interest of the Women's Giving Circle endowment fund.

"The event is really powerful,” said Ritchie. “It allows a group of like-minded women to come together to make an impact and enhance the community that we so love and appreciate living in."
