Morden's Minnewasta School grade one students in Mrs. Kathi Hamm's class have been working toward completing a project. This project from start to finish covered a wide variety of subjects, questions and issues the students needed to find the answers to. These students worked their way to planting 26 shrubs and a tree in front of the school.

"We first started talking about the environment and we started with earth day as our stepping stone. We read a story of how there were children who cleaned up a park, and thought it didn't look very nice so they planted more plants,' said Hamm.

Hamm noted the students were intrigued by the thought of planting more plants to help make everything prettier, but that was just the start.

She continued to say after this they went to the store and asked a bunch of questions, which they thought of themselves. This new information launched into more research for the students who then had to apply for funding to purchase these shrubs and tree. Then the design and planting phase, which was completed Wednesday afternoon.

This was all possible through a 'Project Based Learning' Grant which is helped pair for everything. Hamm explained her and Mrs. Keith filled out the application for this project and were approved.

According to Hamm the students thought of many different ideas as what is needed to be done in order for the plants to survive and who will be watering them and so forth.

"Lots of water, and lots of sunshine," said student Anya Lesser when asked what plants need in order to flourish.

Meanwhile, student Rylee Harms noted the watering will be done by everyone and she added it will be everyone at the school's job to make sure they are watered.

Grade one student Chaseton Harder shared the entire project was fun and stated he learned a lot, but his favorite part of the project was being able to plant the shrubs and water them.
