The Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League is set to be the first non-pro league in Manitoba to implement video goal review. The rule changes will come about for the start of the 2019/2020 season and will be used for all regular season and playoff games.

League President Kerry Lines said the move was made to improve the fan experience. "It's a fast-paced league, and our referees can't see everything. We want to ensure the fans can get the best out of every game ticket purchased. That means getting the calls right around the net."

Head referee of the Manitoba Mini Stick Hockey League, David DiFrancesco, notes that video review has improved the game in their league. The league has been testing out video goal review in its minor league affiliate the MMSHL for the past two seasons. Lines says the time is right to move it up to the big leagues. "We feel we've worked out the bugs in the minors, and we're ready to make the changes needed up here."

Head referee of the Manitoba Mini Stick Hockey League, David DiFrancesco, notes that video review has improved the game in their league. "This is intense, high-calibre competition. Arguments over the legitimacy of a goal used to lead to fist-a-cuffs. Now players and coaches have no choice but to accept the calls. It's right there on the tape!"

As a result of video review, DiFrancesco noted that roughing "cheap shots" and retaliation penalties are down across the league. "It's made us a better, more entertaining league to watch, and we think it will do the same for the MMJHL."

Lines says that the MMJHL will have the video review equipment running for the pre-season, and will be using it behind the scenes to test out various scenarios. However, the rules won't be officially implemented until the beginning of the regular season. "It's a new era in Junior hockey, and we're proud to be at the forefront of it!"
