Local band, the Prairie Red Coats, played a nostalgic set at the Morden Activity Centre Thursday night for the centre's annual Valentine's Day banquet.

Polkas, big band hits, and showtunes filled the ensemble's 90 minute performance inspiring some couples to get up and dance, while others were content to simply tap their feet.

"Lots of variety in their repertoire," said Dale Ready, executive director of the MAC.

The band, led by Bernhard Heftler, represents several generations with seniors and adolescents taking part.

While the MAC is zeroed in on providing recreation and community to the 55-plus crowd, Ready said everyone is able to attend events.

"Every person is welcome," he said, "you don't have to be a member to come to these activities."

Banquets and other gatherings at the MAC are meant to be opportunities for socializing. The Valentine's Day banquet wasn't to raise money, but only to enjoy entertainment and the company of other adults.

"I think the biggest part of the evening," said Ready, "was as people listened to the music, you could see a lot of feet tapping and swaying in the body. In the end we had a number of people up on the dance floor whether it was for the Tennessee waltz or polkas. [The band] put their heart and soul into an hour and a half performance which is an incredible amount of music to play."

In March, the MAC plans to hold a St. Patrick's Day party with Irish stew and a fake-money casino.
