Hair is an important part of one's identity. For thousands of Canadian children each year, they have to deal with the challenges of hair loss due to cancer treatments, alopecia and other medical causes.

Angel Hair for Kids collects donated hair which is turned into wigs for children, boosting their self-esteem and confidence during their health journey.

As mothers, they thought what the experience would be like for their children so Heidi and Lisa, Co-owners at Sheer Bliss Salon and Day Spa in Morden, decided to be a part of the change and began holding events for Angel Hair for Kids.

This was their 9th biannual Angel Hair for Kids event, taking appointments for hair donations and funds needed to create these wigs. Angel Hair wigs can cost between $800 to $1,200 and take 10 to 15  ponytails to complete.

"I remember one year, I think it was one of our first years," shares Heidi. "this mom brought her two daughters and they had this hair which was many, many, many inches. The mom was shedding a tear but the girls were just happy to get rid of it."

Donating hair can be a very emotional procedure especially for those who have been growing it for a long time. Lisa explains some people come with friends for support, in the end, they always say it was worth it as they did it for the kids.

Eric was one person who donated for the first time, having long hair as a man there were some life changes he had to make in order to keep it long but was excited to be able to donate.

"I was really tempted to cut it already about six months in. A friend donated his hair last year which push me forward to keep growing it and get to the point it is today. It feels really good to serve a better purpose than on my head."

People of all ages came to donate the youngest being five-year-old Alyssa who wanted to donate in remembrance of her grandmother.

33 ponytails were collected at this years event,  the amount of money raised is still being calculated.
