A Morden team was the top fundraiser at the Ice Dragon Boat Challenge last weekend in Winnipeg.

The Morden Mosasaurs finished 10th out of 24 teams, but help raise more than $715 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Stephanie Dueck, City of Morden Recreation Programmer, explains the cause hits home for many.

"Most of us have some connection to cancer, someone we know and love that has been diagnosed," she days. "It definitely felt good to raise money for the research to improve treatment. It's something I'd love to see eradicated."

As a recreation programmer, the unique activity was also a draw.

"I always try to find interesting ways for people to be active, and I can't find anything more interesting than riding along in a dragon boat with ice picks."

She notes the team of ten (included four City of Morden employees) packed into a boat with ice picks to propel themselves across the Cindy Klassen Rec Centre - Susan Auch Oval in Winnipeg.

"It takes a lot of energy, power, and stamina," Dueck explains, adding the key is staying in sync with the help of a drummer.

Dragonboat Racing was also another activity to cross off the list in the 150 Playlist challenge.

Morden and Winkler are locked in a friendly competition to knock off as many activities on the list of 150 before July 29.
