Morden Chief of Police Brad Neduzak acknowledges there are different opinions when it comes to the noise of engine retarder brakes, or 'jake brakes'.

"I understand, depending on who you ask, there are reasons for using them, and others don't appreciate them being used due to the noise, especially in residential areas," said Neduzak.

However, he noted the brakes are prohibited within city limits.

"We just ask they respect the signage there, and use them appropriately."

Neduzak said the brakes can be used between 8am and 10pm up until a certain point coming into Morden city limits.

"The big thing is the noise, that is the reason for that by-law," he said. "Most communities have this by-law in place."

Neduzak noted the by-law states violations can result in a $150 fine. "We prefer to... work with the public and the driver, and do some education," he added.
