Upwards of 6 children from the Winkler & Morden area will get the opportunity to attend camp this summer, thanks to the generosity of people supporting Wednesday's Tim Hortons Camp Day.

A combined $9,660 was raised at the Morden and Winkler locations through a portion of sales from various food and drink items, and will be used to send kids to camp who otherwise would not have the opportunity. Other merchandise was also available for purchase leading up to Camp Day as well, like bracelets, hats, and t-shirts.

Winkler/Morden Tim Hortons Co-Owner, Linda Doerksen takes time to sit with customersThree years ago, Anna Dyck was given the opportunity to attend Tim Hortons Camp, and yesterday she made a stop at the Winkler location to help give others the same opportunity.

Dyck said it's great for kids to experience something new, and have these opportunities.  "Three years ago I went to Alberta for a Tim's camp and stayed for 10 days.  We did a lot of swimming, and horse back riding.  It was a lot different than in our area."

"I think it's a great thing for Tim Hortons to do to send kids to camp who maybe can't afford it. It's such a cheap simple thing...It's such a great opportunity for the kids," said Andrew Lane, one of the many customers who stopped by Tim's yesterday to support the cause.

"I went to the Tim's Camp in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, in 1996. It was an amazing experience. I highly encourage everyone to contribute, even if it's as simple as buying a cup of coffee," said Julie Blatz.

"At the time, it felt like such an honour to be able to go. Everything about the camp was so overwhelming. We got to fly in a jet, and then take a charter bus to the camp. They had every kind of boat that I could imagine, and we got to swim on the ocean everyday. For a kid that never got the opportunity to attend camp, it was definitely a once in a lifetime type thing, that I've always appreciated."

In the past, 2 kids from Morden and 2 from Winkler were chosen to go to camp each summer. However, with a Tim's camp now open in Manitoba, it eliminates the need to send kids out of province which has lowered the cost and allows more kids to go.
