Diversitas holds discussions which open the doors to a new understanding of the diversity of the human condition.

Often covering sexuality, culture, and nationality; many of the discussions have covered various religions from around the world.

Religion is an integral part of human civilization. For eons, it has been a foundation of empires, revolutions, and a key component to how humanity has tried to understand the vastness of the universe.

Diversitas' finale was no exception inviting the leaders of the Mormon Church in Manitoba, Rocky and Christine Baronins to speak on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The evening was an opportunity for Rocky and Christine to share why a number of Mormon missionaries have been in the area for several years now and clearing up some misperceptions that have formed around the Church.

"People don't generally come up to us and ask us questions," says Christine. "I think there's a lot of misperceptions and I don't realize as I'm walking around that what people are perceiving of me or of my faith. As a convert, I've had that experience as well, where I didn't even know what a Mormon was."

Another misperception is that Mormons are not Christian and are polygamous. Rocky explains the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Christian belief that is neither Catholic or Protestant.

It follows the teachings of the Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon. Rocky and Christine say that there are passages in the Old Testament which have indicated the use of polygamous marriages and the Church practiced this until it was discontinued in 1890.

Any groups that continue to practice polygamy and call themselves Mormon are not recognized by the Church of Latter Day Saints explains Rocky.

A large aspect of the Church is a desire to serve, currently, around 67,000 missionaries are serving around the world, helping where they can and sharing about their faith. The Pembina Valley is one such location where missionaries have been sent to serve.

Forums like Diversitas gives people the chance to share more about themselves and what they believe and was a great opportunity says, Christine.

"These education sessions and opportunities to clarify what we believe, I think it's wonderful. I wish there were more opportunities to do that."

Diversitas will end for the season, picking up again in September.

Elders(missionaries), serving in the area, attended the evening to share their own experiences of the Mormon faith.
