Charges have been formally laid in the stabbing attack at Winkler's Pembina Valley Baptist Church Sunday afternoon.

Winkler Police Servce has charged Maksym Kravchenko, 39-years-old and a resident of Winkler, with aggravated assault and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Kravchenko was remanded into custody, and is set to appear in Morden Provincial Court August 29th.

The attack took place around 1 p.m Sunday.

Shortly after the Sunday service, police say the accused, an occasional visitor of the church, entered the women's washroom and attacked a teen girl with a folding knife.

When Winkler Police arrived on scene they found the 15-year-old girl had been stabbed multiple times in the midsection.

The victim was, however, able to give a brief description of her attacker. With the help of other church-goers, police located and arrested the accused within minutes in the parking lot.

However, Winkler Police Chief Rick Hiebert says there's been no indication of why the man attacked the young girl.

"Everybody wants to know why, and we're just as frustrated," Hiebert says. "We are unable to determine any motive at all."

Police say the accused was not known to the victim.

"The accused has not offered police any leads as to his motive for the attack, so it's very hard to say what his intent was," Hiebert says. "So we're following the Crown Attorney's instructions as to what charges to lay."

Hiebert adds the man's mental condition is also unknown at this time.

Without a motive police followed the Crown Attorney's recommendations, charging the man with aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The accused was taken to Portage Provincial Court Monday morning.

"Our thoughts go out to the victim and her family, we wish them a full and speedy recovery," Hiebert says. "It's a very traumatic event."

The victim was transported to Boundary Trails Health Centre by ground ambulance before being airlifted to Health Sciences Centre by STARS Air Ambulance on Sunday.

The latest report suggests the victim is in stable condition.
