RCMP are warning motorists of the prevalence of "black ice" on Southern Manitoba highways after several incidents south of Carman.

Media Relations Officer Sergeant Paul Manaigre explains a hot sun beating down on the highways will create moisture that then freezes into a clear glaze.

"You throw in a little bit of wind, and that moisture will freeze because the ground is still frozen. People get this perception that it's a warm day and the roads are clear, but the wind could make things slick underneath."

"The dangers are, if you're not paying attention to your speed or how you brake, you could put yourself in a precarious position."

Don't let the sunny conditions fool you, Manaigre says. "Road conditions are based on temperatures and the ground is frozen. You put any moisture on it and it causes ice. We know ice and vehicles don't mix well."
