MP Candice Bergen made a stop at the Altona Police Station Thursday afternoon to recognize the contributions of small community emergency service workers as part of Canada 150, and said she wanted to honour the people in communities who make Canada the great country it is.

"[First responders] are there when we are in our worst, most vulnerable, most desperate place -- [and they] are at their very best. But they still have to go home and they're still moms and dads and humans ... and they still live with what they see," said Bergen.

Over the next six weeks, Bergen will be delivering and mailing over 700 certificates to emergency service stations through Portage-Lisgar to show her appreciation.

Constable Brendan Funk said he values Bergen's gesture.

"Often times people see us in the worst of situations and that's a part of the job we recognize, and we do our best to help people as much as we can. Receiving recognition for the work we do, that we try to do to the best of our abilities, feels very rewarding," said Funk.

Constable Mark Legal added, though they do not do this job for the 'thank you's,' it still feels good to be recognized.
