Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen is taken aback by a new policy that scales back benefits for those serving in elite branches of the military.

Even as the nation recently celebrated the sacrifices of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the federal Liberal government has introduced a policy that claws back salary top-ups if members are sick or injured and can't return to active service after more than 180 days.

"It wasn't extravagant... but it was certainly something that would help these men and women who give so much," Bergen says.

The change would impact JTF-2 Commandos, paratroopers, and submarine crew, among others, who are injured in the line of duty.

"That is despicable," federal defence critic James Bezan says, adding the worst part is most of the injured soldiers are only finding out about the change now, and have to retro-actively pay back any extra stipends they received since September 1st.

Bergen says it's heartbreaking to watch, "they make these changes and don't allow parliament to debate it... they have a majority so they shut down debate... and ram their changes through."

Bezan adds the Trudeau government is pinching pennies to pay for out-of-control spending.
