Debbi Fortier will be running for the position of reeve for the RM of Montcalm in October.

In spring, Fortier will be retiring from her position as general manager at Community Futures Triple R.

"I have always been interested in politics, I actually ran unsuccessfully in 1998. But, for the last number of years, my career played a mayor role in my life and I just didn't feel I would have the time to do both, but I will be retiring in spring and I think this will be my next challenge in life," said Fortier.

Fortier is familiar with politicians in the Pembina Valley through her work. "So, I believe I have made those connections already, I certainly have connections with political parties as well, so I think I'm well situated to lead," she said.

She outlined some of the projects she will strive toward.

"I know the current council is working on getting better internet service for the region, I certainly will want to carry that forward," she said. "I would like to see more community economic development, more businesses come in... with saying that, we have to continue to support the ones that are there."

Other projects Fortier has in mind include services for seniors and supporting the local school.

"I will be open minded, creative and progressive in determining strategies and directions. I will be diligent in assessing all potential risks and rewards prior to decision making," said Fortier.
