A Winkler resident is charged with assaulting a police officer after an altercation on Sunday.

September 24, two Winkler Police Service members attended a serious domestic assault at a home on Hemlock Bay.

When they arrived the male suspect fled the home and entered a vehicle.

However, as police arrived at the home, the suspect drove back onto the driveway, exited the vehicle he was in, and pointed a weapon at the officers. Police were quickly able to recognize the weapon as a realistic replica handgun.

The suspect then became combative with police and began assaulting them. A Conducted Electrical Weapon was deployed by police however the suspect continued his assault and attempted to disarm one of the officers of his firearm. During the altercation the officer's firearm was discharged. Nobody was injured as a result.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody by police. Both officers and the suspect were treated at Boundary Trails Health Centre for minor injuries sustained during the incident. The injuries were not related to the discharge of the firearm.

"I'm extremely proud of our officers' professionalism," Police Chief Rick Hiebert says. "And the manner they investigate extremely dangerous situations."
