The new gymnasium and fitness centre at W.C. Miller Collegiate was on full display as Border Land School Division trustees and senior administration were given a tour of the facility on Friday.

Construction on the $5.9 million state-of-the-art gym has been underway since Fall 2017, and while the exterior of the facility took shape early in the process, the interior is now beginning to come together as well.

"It's exciting to see areas like the fitness centre being done and the lobby looking more like it will when it's up-and-running, so you get a sense of the space and we (already) have some equipment in there," said Angela Pilkington, principal at W.C. Miller Collegiate. "We look forward to getting in and using it," she added.

Chairperson for the BLSD Board of Trustees, Craig Smiley, was also impressed with the building.

"It looks fabulous," he said. "I'm very pleased with where it's at, I wish it was happening a little faster but we understand with what's all happened, we may as well take our time and get it done right."

Work on the facility was halted in mid-summer over concerns about the installation of the roof trusses. After a short delay, a solution was reached and construction got back on track. The hitch did set the project back from the original deadline of Fall 2018, however Pilkington is optimistic students will be using the new gym in the second semester.

The new 12,918 square foot gym will boast a 24 ft. high ceiling, additional change rooms, storage, office space and a 1,000 sq. ft. fitness room. There will also be a link built to connect the new facility to the school.
