The semi-annual pancake breakfast fundraiser put on by the 179 Morden Air Cadet Squadron collects money to maintain the cadet program for the roughly 50 young people who attend each week.

These teens and pre-teens learn about aviation, aeronautics, citizenship, and leadership training during their weekly time in uniform.

"It's all designed to make our youth into good, productive citizens," Captain Rick Helps, the supply officer with the squad, said about the program.

Part of the training every cadet receives is education about how the country is governed. Through leadership training, cadets are enabled to participate in planning activities in their own circles.

"We always get very good comments on the bearing of these young cadets," Cpt. Helps said.

"through their training, they learn respect and discipline, not only for themselves but for others."

He was quite pleased with the money raised at the event, approximately $700. The money will be used to pay costs not covered by the Department of National Defence. These include, among other things, trips to museums or visit to other squads.

"By raising money, we ensure that all cadets are able to participate in the activities at no cost to them," said Cpt. Helps.

The food was all donated by local businesses so the cost for the event was low.
