The community of Pembina, North Dakota is keeping a close watch on the Red River this spring.

Mayor Kyle Dorian says the National Weather Service is predicting the Red will crest in their community at 51 feet, which is about 1.5 feet below the 2009 flood level.

"51 feet is not a major issue for us, but there are a few things we have to do. We have to put up one small flood wall and a few sandbags along that wall, but other than that, it's just a matter of watching the levee and making sure there are no leaks anywhere. For the most part, the town is fine."

Dorion says they recently shored up the levees protecting the community to FEMA standards at a flood level of 57.4 feet, which gives them a lot of room.

"I don't think anyone here is too worried about it. We go off of what Grand Forks does and they're supposed to crest at about 48 feet and we are usually about a foot higher or lower that than they are. If that's any indication, then 50 feet here at Pembina would be kind of a reach."

The Red River is expected to crest at Pembina next week.
