Aspen Colorado was the destination for Letellier's Josh Penner, who made his second appearance at the X-Games. His first appearance was in 2016 and now again in 2017 a couple of weeks ago.

"Everything went as planned this year. I nailed all the tricks I wanted to do," said Penner. "I introduced the quarter-pipe to the sport and landed that for the first time in competition. Everything that I could control went well."

This time around Penner competed in the Snowmobile freestyle and snowmobile best-trick competitions.

'Freestyle is a sixty-five-second run, doing all sorts of tricks, anything you want goes. It's a freestyle event. We have two different ramps we hit, in an oval shape. You do as many tricks as you can in sixty-five seconds and you get scored," explained Penner. "The best trick is two runs, one hit each run. You just try and do your best or most unique trick and try and win that."

In the best trick competition, Penner was the first person to land a 'egg-roll with a flip trick variation' in a competition format. He stated it was brought into the world of dirt bikes about three years ago and felt it was only a matter of time before the snowmobilers were trying to do it and he was successful in doing it.

"I think the sport was looking for something new," added Penner. "There are two other guys like Colten Moore and Heath Frisby doing the double back-flip. I think best-trick always allows guys to get creative and innovative in bringing new stuff and really pushing themselves to try new things."

According to Penner he was very confident that he was going to be able to be the first person to complete this trick on a snowmobile because in practice he has been able to land it nearly every time. He remembered only falling off maybe one time. Penner stated he expected to see his name at the top of the list, because he was the first person to do this trick on a snowmobile, but it resulted in only a fourth place finish for him.

Like every sport, everyone wants to see it grow and develop into something more, and snowmobiling is no different. Penner has been mentioned on social media as one of the athletes trying to try new things and changing the sport.

"It's nice to see people take notice of that kind of stuff, because we spent months training on this quarter pipe, building and practicing. I think I was in Idaho for pretty much the whole winter, roughly nineteen hours away from home. I didn't see anybody, and I didn't work. I spent all my money on this thing to get it to work. It's cool to see people take notice as to how hard we are working on changing the sport."

Another cool thing for Penner is to see someone from Letellier Manitoba compete at the X-Games. He stated it was cool to see all the support he had on social media with people taking pictures and showing that they are cheering him on.

"It was definitely a dream of mine to end up somewhere. I thought it would be racing moto-cross, and now it's freestyle, which I never thought would happen. It's kind of like a dream come true to see it. I'm not really star struck by it, because I am pretty competitive. I always want more and am looking for what's next," said Penner. "I think last year it hit me harder. Then I was more like, 'wow that's cool'. This year I just put it aside and focused on what I was doing and made it happen."

Penner stated he isn't quite interested in doing the double back-flip after seeing what happened the other weekend, but is going to continue to push the envelope and change the sport of snowmobile freestyle.
