An adult male was arrested for driving impaired Monday after fleeing Winkler Police.

Officers were on general patrol Monday morning and came across a vehicle stopped on Gemstone Dr. in Winkler. Police say the driver was slumped in his seat with his head down as they approached.

However, when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop the driver put his vehicle in motion and fled from police. After a short pursuit where the driver disobeyed speed limits and stop signs, he eventually pulled over.

Police say it quickly became apparent the suspect was impaired by alcohol and was arrested for driving while impaired, as well as flight from police and dangerous driving. Two breath samples revealed readings over .250 percent, three times the legal limit.

"It's not common to find drivers' with that high of blood-alcohol content at 10:30 a.m on a Monday morning, but I'm just thankful our officers found this person before he caused a serious collision," Police Chief Ryan Hunt says.
