Bike safety awareness should always be a priority, but especially as cycling activity picks up throughout the summer season, says Altona police Chief Perry Bachelor.

First, said Bachelor, it's important to ensure the safety of the bike itself. For residents of the Altona area, he suggests registering the bike on the Altona police service website [INSERT LINK], free of cost. Users can submit details about their bike, including the frame size, make, model, serial number, photos and more.

The Winkler and Morden police services recommend that residents document the serial number of their bike as well as details and distinguishing marks for their own personal record. Any lost or stolen bicycles should then be reported as missing to a local police station.

Second, Bachelor emphasized how important it is to follow cycling guidelines. This includes stopping at stop signs, using hand signals, and sharing the roads responsibly with motor vehicles. He reminds cyclists that it is the law to wear a helmet under the age of 18.

"We just hope that the adults in the communities can set the standard," he said.
