The proposal to reduce Winkler's residential garbage limit to a single bag per week has been pushed to January 2019.

Mayor Martin Harder says as composting and recycling ramps up, the single limit will become more doable.

"One of the things we're finding is the amount of product put into compost is making a huge difference in the amount going to the garbage dump," Harder says.

He notes the city will also see compost pick-up increased to every week.

However, with the increase of compost curbside collection, the city has struck a deal with waste disposal contractor Penner Waste to encourage residents to eliminate garbage cans in favour of garbage bags.

The bags would speed up pick-up and would be mandatory starting in a few months, January 2018.

Another major change being looked at in Winkler's waste disposal is the proposal to privatize commercial and industrial waste.

Harder has said the change would encourage industry to recycle more.

Currently, businesses receive and pay for, one large bin pick-up per week regardless of their exact waste needs. Businesses would then be encouraged pursue their own contract with a garbage pick-up service. The proposal is also earmarked for 2019.
